One morning this past winter, I awoke to an incredibly different sunrise over Cerro Summit-- rays of the sun actually shot high up vertically, as if through a hole in the clouds. The rays spread horizontally as well, illuminating the tops of the hills in subtle shades of warm colors.
I knew instantly that this had to be the subject for my painting in an upcoming exhibit at the local gallery with the theme of "luminosity". Although the sky at the time was quite dark, I found my initial attempts at creating such a dark sky to be disappointing. Days later I was still stuck with a photo that didn't quite capture my feelings and inspiration days before. Finally, I created a sky of rainbow colors, somewhat prismatic in feel. I called the painting "Nature's Lumens".
